Shenandoah National Park

Fall is a beautiful time to visit the park. You can also enjoy leaf-peeping while there. Although the peak leaf-peeping season varies every year, it’s generally the end of October. In winter, however, the park’s weather can become inclement and portions of Skyline Drive can close. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the park with your family.

The Central District is the most popular area of Shenandoah National Park, and the park’s highest points offer amazing views. The southern part of the park is great if you want to escape the crowds during peak season. This section of the park offers hiking trails that include overlook hikes, waterfall hikes, and climbing on rock.

Bearfence Mountain

For kids, Bearfence Mountain is a fun hike. The trail is easy but the first part of the trail is quite steep. This hike is not recommended to toddlers. Children 6 years old and older should be able handle it. It is important to remember that every child is different, and parents’ risk tolerance varies.

Although the climb to the summit is not difficult, it does include some rocks that can be difficult to climb. The trail is less than two miles roundtrip and offers great views of the area. The trail offers guided horseback riding tours for families with children. Rides last one to 2.5 hours. You can also opt for hand-guided pony rides if your child is not old enough to ride horses.

Marys Rock

Kids can also try duckpin bowling and an old-time roadside attraction called Dinosaur Land. There are also plenty of activities and attractions in the southern part of the park, which are less visited during peak season. You can also go on a waterfall hike or rock climbing adventure in the south part of the park if you are looking for something more adventurous.

Stony Man

Stony Man is Shenandoah National Park’s second highest peak. It is an easy hike, which gains 360 feet in elevation and is less difficult than Hawksbill Loop. It can get crowded during the summer and fall due to its popularity.

There are several activities to keep kids entertained in Shenandoah National Park. The park offers both easy and difficult hikes, depending on their level of interest. It is a great place for families to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life and just enjoy nature at its best.
